Early Life and Family Background

He was born on January 22, 1902 in Nogales, Arizona. He was raised by James Woolf, who was his maternal grandfather. The parents of John got separated when he was young that’s why he spent most of his life with his grandfather.

His grandfather was a bird hunter. From him, he developed an interest in hunting but not specifically for birds. Since he was a child, he developed a passion for hunting big games. At the age of 12, he embarked on his first hunting expedition, targeting a desert mule deer. He also wrote about it in his book “The Hunting Rifle”.

He also started his hunting by hunting whitetail deer / Coues deer that inhabit the desert mountains of Mexico, United States.

Educational Details

He was born in Nogales Arizona on 22 Jan 1902 and got his early education from a nearby school. For higher studies, he was admitted to the University of Arizona in 1921 and completed a two-year degree program from there in 1923. Later, he got entrance to the University of Arkansas. He completed his graduation from there in 1925.

Later, he decided to continue his studies. He was admitted to the University of Missouri and earned a master’s degree from there in 1927 2 years after his graduation. Moreover, he continued writing on different topics in his student career because writing made him happy.

Career as a Teacher

He started his professional career by teaching. In 1927, he was appointed to his first job in Alpine, Texas where he was hired as an associate professor of English. He also became an Associated Press Correspondent for Southwest Texas in the Alpine region.

In addition to his proficiency in English, he was also hired as a journalism professor at Sul Ross State Normal College in Alpine. This college is today known as Sul Ross State University.

After the success of his first novel in 1931, he was appointed as Public relations officer and Assistant professor of English at Arizona States Teachers College.

In the fall of 1934, he moved his post and became the University’s first associate professor of Journalism at the University of Arizona.

He quit his teaching career completely in 1945 after giving it 18 best years.

Career as a writer

In the middle of the 1920s, writing had become a part of his life. At the beginning of his writing career which was in 1924, he worked for a local newspaper. Later he started working on a novel that he finished in the summer of 1929, the name of his novel is Conquest which was a story about  Arizona Frontier.

This novel was published in 1930 by Harper. This novel was also reviewed throughout the nation favorably as a first effort. In 1931, he also published “Rifles and Cartridges for Southwestern Games” his first outdoor article.

No doubt that John Connor faced a lot of rejection even from American Rifleman; he never gave up and succeeded in sports Afield on his second attempt. This also led him to many outdoor magazines and articles.
In 1934, he appeared in outdoor life with a piece entitled Arizona’s Antelope Problem for the first time in his life and career.
Before leaving his educational career, he introduced 18 new articles along with his second novel that was “Boom Town”. In his second novel, he introduced a story of the Arizona mining frontier. He was made a gun editor of the magazine in 1941.

In 1948, he moved with his family to Lewiston, Idaho. After shifting there he said, “The great growth of Arizona annoyed me and I sold my place in Tuscan, picked our luggage, and moved here”.

He also likes his new place Lewiston because there are good big hunting games nearby. Not only is this but there is also super bird hunting or upland hunting.

Hunting as Hobby

Yeah, he shifted his permanent residence to Lewiston but he traveled all over the earth for hunting. From 1940 to 1970, he mostly traveled on four continents including Asia, North America, Europe, and Africa.

The places in these continents which he traveled a lot include Rhodesia, Kenya, India, Scotland, Itlay, Iran, Tanzania, Mexico, Yukon, British Columbia, Alberta, Alaska, and mostly in the Western United States.
In his hunting hobbies, he loved to hunt sheep. In this journey, he was the fifth guy who was able to hunt “grand slams” of all four varieties of North American sheep, desert bighorn, rocky mountain big horn, stone, and dall. He stood 10 in stone and 12 in Dall trophies in a world record.

Wife and Children

John Connor was an adult person. He got married after setting his career on 10 September 1927. He was married to Eleanor Barry. They lived a happy life together.
He also has three children and seven grandchildren. This couple had enjoyed a great quality time with their family, children, and grandchildren.

The concept of mountain riffle came into his mind when by experienced hunting big games in mountain terrain. The most popular rifles of John Connor were made by Alvin Biesen (Winchester model 70) usually chambered for his favorite cartridge (270 Winchester).

His rifles are mostly lightweight, accurate, and well-balanced. He also likes Springfield 1903 and Mauser 98. He also has customized riffles that are renowned by Alvin Linden, a famous gunsmith of that era. This was the man who restocked his first Model 70.

Also from W.A. Sukalle and Griffin and Howe. The last riffle of him was customized by AI Biesen (Ruger M77) that had chambered in the 280 Remington cartridge.

This man made a lot of achievements in his life. He admitted that he was so blessed to enjoy his hobby and career at the same time. On 20 January 1978, he died because of a heart attack.
